10 Things to Do in the Black Hills of South Dakota
If you know me, you know my happy place is the Black Hills of South Dakota.
This beautiful area is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country, and there's something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're a nature lover, outdoor enthusiast, or history buff, you'll find plenty to keep you busy in the Black Hills.
There are numerous other items I could add to this list and probably will in the future. However, here are ten things to get you started that you don't want to miss when visiting this amazing region!
See Bison at Custer State Park
One of the best things about the Black Hills is that they are home to a large population of bison. These massive animals are truly a sight to behold, and you can see them up close at Custer State Park. The park offers several different ways to view the bison, including driving through their habitat on Wildlife Loop Road or taking a guided tour. If you’re visiting in the fall, be sure to check-out the annual bison round-up.
Eat Dinner at the Alpine House in Hill City
My family has been eating at the Alpine House since I was a kid. The menu is limited to essentially "big" and "little" steak. Vegetarian options have been added in recent years, but you come to the Alpine House for a steak.
It's an intimate restaurant that does not take reservations or credit cards. That's right – bring cash. Luckily, there is an ATM on-site in the bar.
Be sure to arrive early as this popular dinner spot fills up quickly.
Get Over Your Fear of Heights with a Scenic Drive on Needles Highway
If you're looking for breathtaking views, Needles Highway is the place to go. This scenic drive takes you through some of the most beautiful country in the Black Hills. The road itself is quite winding and narrow in places, but it's definitely worth it for the views. You'll also get a lesson in road etiquette as you navigate going through one-way mountain-carved tunnels on a two-way road.
Climb Crazy Horse Monument
The Crazy Horse Monument has been under construction since 1948. It s the world’s largest mountain carving, honoring Lakota leader Crazy Horse. Standing at over 6,532 feet above sea level
There is an informative museum on-site that provides a plethora of information on the history of the local tribes.
Now, if you've never gone, it's worth visiting. However, what I really recommend is being in town for the Volksmarch. Twice a year, visitors are allowed to summit the monument. The entire hike is 6.2 miles.
Take a Day Trip to Devil's Tower in Wyoming
If you're staying near Mt. Rushmore, the drive to Devil's Tower is a bit of a drive, but it is sooo worth it. This is a full-day trip, but the intense and odd beauty of this natural monument is breathtaking.
Whether you're looking for a simple walk, an intense hike, or a stellar climb – this national monument has it all.
The drive is peaceful and filled with wild Wyoming landscapes. There is something quite exhilarating about seeing Devil's Tower pop up from the trees for the first time.
Explore Deadwood & Wild Bill Hickok's Grave
Deadwood is a historic town located deep in the Black Hils. This once-booming mining town is now a popular tourist destination, and it's easy to see why. Deadwood is filled with history, from Wild Bill Hickok's grave to the Historic Adams House. You can also take a walk down Main Street to see some of the original buildings that are still standing.
Hike Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish Canyon is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Black Hills. The canyon is home to several different trails, ranging from easy to difficult. No matter what your skill level, you'll find a trail that's right for you. And if you get tired of hiking, you can always take a scenic drive through the canyon instead.
Summit Mt. Harney
Mt. Harney is the highest peak in the southern Black Hills, and it's a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The summit of Mt. Harney offers stunning views of the surrounding area, and it's definitely worth the effort to get there. If you're up for a challenge, try summiting Mt. Harney via the Iron Creek Trail. This trail is steep and strenuous, but it's one of the most scenic routes to the top.
Kayak in Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, and kayaking. The lake is located in Custer State Park, and beautiful cliffs and forests surround it. If you're looking for a relaxing day on the water, Sylvan Lake is the perfect place to go.
Take a Helicopter Ride
One of the best ways to see the Black Hills is from above. There are several companies that offer helicopter tours, and they're definitely worth the money. You'll get a bird's eye view of some of the most beautiful scenery in the area, and you might even spot some wildlife.
Bonus: And, of course – Visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial
No trip to the Black Hills is complete without a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This iconic site features the faces of four American presidents carved into the side of a mountain. You can take a ranger-led tour, hike one of the many trails, or just enjoy the view from the observation deck. Whatever your view on the monument, you're going to run across it on your drives.
