10 Things to Do on the Island of Naxos: Greece's Most Enchanting Greek Isle

The island of Naxos is one of the most enchanting Greek Isles. With its dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, it's no wonder that this beautiful island is a popular tourist destination. If you're looking for things to do on Naxos, you'll be spoiled for choice!

I first fell in love with Naxos after watching Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown feature on the island. Shortly after, I learned I would be visiting while attending what was essentially my "birthright" trip. The area is uniquely mountainous yet filled with unbeatable sandy beaches.

Based on my 2019 trip to Naxos with Heritage Greece, here are some suggestions taken from things I did and activities my friends suggested. Below are 10 ideas that will help you make the most of your time on this magical island:

Visit the Temple of Demeter

The temple is one of the most important archaeological sites on the island and is dedicated to the goddess of agriculture, Demeter.

Take a hike up Mount Zas

At over 1000 meters tall, Mount Zas is the highest point on the island. The hike to the top is challenging but rewards you with stunning views of Naxos and the neighboring islands.

Go for a swim at Plaka Beach

Plaka beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing with its gentle waves and sandy shores.

Explore the Venetian Castle

The Venetian Castle is a must-see for history buffs. Built in the 13th century, it was once the home of the Venetian governors of Naxos.

Visit the Archaeological Museum

The museum houses a collection of artifacts from the island, including pottery, sculptures, and jewelry.

Taste traditional Greek food

Naxos is famous for its delicious food. Make sure to try some of the local specialties such as cheese pies, koufeto (a type of sweet), and loukaniko (sausages). Remember: we're on Greek time here. If you really want to live like a local, don't show up to dinner until 10:00 PM and plan on staying there until 1:00 AM.

Go windsurfing

With its strong winds and sheltered bay, Naxos is a great place for windsurfing. There are several windsurfing schools on the island where you can take lessons.

Watch the sunset from Agios Prokopios beach

Agios Prokopios is one of the most beautiful beaches on Naxos and a perfect spot to watch the sunset.

Drink local wine

Naxos is home to some of the best wines in Greece. Try a glass of the local red wine, known as Aidani. During Heritage, we were brought to a remote village within the mountains. Some of these folks had lived so deep in the mountains that they had never seen the ocean. And they live on an island. That being said, they made the best Greek wine I've ever had – from what I can remember! (ha).

Dance the night away

Naxos is known for its lively nightlife. There are many bars and clubs where you can dance the night away. It isn't as vibrant as Mykonos or Ios, but there are still some great spots you can find to get the club bug out!
