The smallest of the Dutch-Caribbean ABC Islands, Bonaire is truly where the wild things are. With a population of less than 25,000, this rugged island remains mostly untouched by tourism, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in nature. From scuba diving and snorkeling to exploring the national park and trying out local cuisine, there is no shortage of things to do in Bonaire.

Dive into the Underwater World

Bonaire is known as one of the top dive destinations in the world, with crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. The island has a total of 86 official dive sites, ranging from easy shore dives to more challenging deep sea dives. With over 57 species of coral and 350 fish species, divers can expect to see an endless array of colorful creatures such as parrotfish, angelfish, and even sea turtles.

A great way to truly get a grip on the underwater world is to book a snorkeling tour with  Reef Renewal Foundation at Buddy Dive Resort. Eager swimmers will have the chance to get up close and personal with the coral nurseries they are so diligently working to preserve amid a hard fight against climate change.

Visit Washington Slagbaai National Park

If you only leave your resort once during your trip, let it be to Washington Slagbaai National Park. In addition to the six designated dive spots, there is an incredible flamingo reservoir. As someone who has always wanted to see wild flamingos, I was truly tickled pink (pun intended.). I'd also suggest either booking a tour or ensuring your car has a 4-wheel drive. It's pretty rough out on the roads!

Take a Windsurfing Lesson

I never say no to an adventure, and the opportunity to try windsurfing for the first time was no exception. I took a one hour lesson at Jibe City, and it was so much fun. I think being naturally athletic gave me an edge over my companions, but it’s not an easy sport!

The experience was a ton of fun, and the guides were so, so chill. The water doesn't get very deep, so don't worry if you're not a strong swimmer. If you already have experience, you can also just rent boards here and hit the water! Plus, there’s an on-site restaurant, Hang Out Beach Bar, that’s the perfect spot to refuel after a lesson.

Take a Sunset Cruise with Melisa Sailing

I'd been dying to get out on a boat all summer, and I finally got the opportunity with Melisa Sailing. Between sailing up and down the island, we enjoyed an incredible six-course menu. Between the views, the epic food from award-winning Chef Brandon Poort, and the endless drinks – it was a summer fantasy come true. ABBA tunes were bumpin', and I was living my best life. We even managed to convince a couple of our colleagues to recreate that scene from Titanic on the front of the boat. Don’t worry – it’s too warm for icebergs.

See the Salt Pans and Explore the Island's South Side

Not to be forgotten, the south side of Bonaire is filled with must-see spots. You'll catch the eye-popping pink salt pans, as well as another endless round of dive spots. On the drive down to Jibe City, we even stopped to watch some crazy-cool kite-surfers. As you can see, I also made a donkey friend.
