Traveling to a new country can be an amazing experience, but it can also be a little daunting for first-timers. If you're new to international travel, don't worry - we've got you covered! In this blog post, we will discuss ten tips that will help make your trip easier and more enjoyable. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and get ready to explore the world!

No Need to Be Scared!

Remember that you're not alone. Millions of people travel to foreign countries every year, and most of them have a great time! Don't be intimidated by the thought of traveling to a new place; just go in with an open mind and be prepared for some amazing experiences.

Take Your Time

I am well aware that slow travel is a privilege. I understand that you may be trying to squeeze four countries into a 10-day trip. If that is unavoidable, I encourage you not to overpack your days. Instead, take a few moments to absorb the culture of each place. Take pictures, makes notes, and talk to locals.

Pack Light

For the love of all things that are holy, don't check your bag. If you are going somewhere for less than two weeks, I don't want to hear it. I took only a backpack on a trip to Iceland in the dead of winter and was fine.

Remember: Idiots Do It Everyday

Whenever someone tells me they are nervous about their first international trip, I remind them that true idiots have been doing it every day for hundreds of years. You are likely not the dumbest person to ever take this trip. They survived; you'll survive.

Get Travel Insurance

I am an anxious bean and always get travel insurance when I go international. It doesn't have to be too expensive, and the investment could save you lots of cash if you do find yourself tripping on cobblestone and twisting your ankle. I admit I've never had to use my travel insurance, but it has given me peace of mind (especially while skiing overseas!).

Be Flexible

We all know how it goes: you plan your entire itinerary, and then something unexpected comes up. That's why it is important to stay flexible when traveling abroad. Things don't always go according to plan, so be prepared for changes and accept them as part of the adventure!

One of my personal favorite quotes and phrases to live by comes from world-traveler and cook Anthony Bourdain, who said:

"I'm a big believer in winging it. I'm a big believer that you're never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I'm always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary."

Learn to Say "Hello" and "Thank You"

Try to learn at least a few key phrases in the local language before you go - it will help you communicate with locals and make your experience much more enjoyable. You don't have to become fluent overnight, but basic knowledge of the language can go a long way!

Try Local Cuisine

One of the best parts about international travel is sampling all the different cuisines that each country has to offer. So don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new - you never know what culinary delights you might discover! I've been on a food tour kick lately and have really been enjoying these unique ways to connect with locals and try some traditional bites. I've always left full as can be!

Make Local Friends

Making friends with locals is one of the best ways to get a real sense of the culture. Talk to people, learn about their lives, and share stories with them. They can be a great resource if you're looking for advice or need help navigating the city. An easy way to do this is to simply sit at the bar rather than at a table when getting drinks. I've truly kept in contact with many people I met over drinks.

Let Go of Your Expectations

When I travel abroad, I try to go in with an open mind and let go of any expectations or preconceived notions. Instead, I just enjoy the journey and take it all in. And please, please, please avoid the phrase "well back in America..." ;)
