Best Hot Springs Near Boise: Kirkham Hot Springs

Woman soaking in hot springs while its snowing in Idaho.

Sitting in a pool of hot water, an NA IPA in hand, snow pouring down, and a herd of elk across the way. I think this is heaven. My first trip to a true natural hot springs was perfect. Kirkham Hot Springs is located in the Boise National Forest, just a two-hour drive from downtown Boise. It's one of the best hot springs near Boise that offers stunning views, a laid-back atmosphere, and, obviously, multiple natural hot pools to soak in.

Exploring Kirkham Hot Springs

Hot springs pool in Idaho

Kirkham Hot Springs is nestled along the South Fork Payette River with multiple soaking pools scattered on a cliff. The water temperature ranges from 95-110 degrees Fahrenheit and flows down into the river, providing visitors with a perfect mix of warm and cool temperatures. There are a few upper ponds closer to the parking area, but a short hike down to the cliffside allows you to look over the raging river below.

What to Expect

Kirkham Hot Springs is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It can get quite busy during peak seasons, so be prepared to share the pools with others. The upper pools are surrounded by rocks and have small cascading waterfalls. As you make your way down to the cliffside, there are more pools available for soaking. These lower pools offer a breathtaking view of the river and surrounding mountains– and a herd of elk if you're lucky, like me!
