6 Best Things to Do in Curaçao

I'm ashamed to admit that prior to being invited on a press trip, I knew almost nothing about Curaçao. As a member of the ABC islands, I'd only really considered visiting Aruba. After just a few days in Curaçao, I realized how much the world is missing out on by skipping it for its more famous Caribbean neighbors. As Curaçao's self-proclaimed motto "Feel for Yourself" says – you really must.

Curaçao is so much more than an island vacation. There is a strong middle class that you don't see as often in the Caribbean. Many locals are thriving, and as a result, they are able to bring a deeply rich cultural scene to what otherwise could just be "another beach destination" – and that's what makes it so unique. It is a melting pot of cultures that results in a diverse cuisine, language, and artistic expression.

Below, we'll cover the best things to do in Curaçao.

Snorkel at the Sunken Tugboat

I've snorkeled at the Great Barrier Reef, and I'd say that this experience was right up there. The tugboat was intentionally sunk to create a dive spot, and the result is a shallow snorkeling locale that allows you to observe all sorts of sea life up close.

The tugboat itself is covered in various coral species. Even if you're not an experienced snorkeler, this spot is perfect for beginners as it's only about 20 feet deep. My favorite part is that it's just a short swim from a little beach bar, so you can go back and forth between exploring the underwater world and enjoying a refreshing beverage.

Enjoy a Spa Day at 8 The Experience

I'm a sucker for a good spa day, and 8 The Experience is one of my favorites. In addition to massages and other classic services, you can purchase a day pass to simply chill at their breathtakingly beautiful outdoor pool. Plus, you can order poolside drinks while looking out over the ocean from their cliffside location. It's the perfect way to unwind and treat yourself during your vacation.

Get Lost in the Kura Hulanda Village

Located in the capital city of Willemstad, the Kura Hulanda Village is a charming neighborhood that offers a glimpse into Curaçao's history and culture. The village is made up of restored buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, giving it an old-world feel. You can wander through cobblestone streets and admire the colorful architecture.

Of course, it would be remiss not to mention that this area was once the center of the island's slave trade. The Kura Hulanda Museum is a must-visit for its informative exhibits on the history of slavery in Curaçao and how the island is continually working to reckon with its past.

Visit Francis Sling’s Gallery

A stop at Francis Sling's Gallery is a must-do. The gallery showcases the work of renowned Curaçaoan artist Francis Sling and features truly stunning paintings that capture the essence of the island. You'll see Sling's art scattered throughout the island on buildings, murals, and even utility poles. No pictures in the gallery are allowed (except for a fee).

Explore the Mango Trees at Hòfi Mango

A unique addition to the island, Hòfi Mango features a thousand mango trees spread across its landscape. Once a plantation, the site has transformed its complex history into a beautiful nature park for everyone to explore. Guests are encouraged to stroll through the lush groves and indulge in a refreshing treat at the on-site restaurant, with the added bonus of sampling local rum as well!

Book an Appointment with the Universal Alchemist

Typically, I'm not someone who is into the spiritual and new-age scene, but I'm always down to try something new. The Universal Alchemist, also known as Marerly “Elly” Sambo, offers one-of-a-kind services that combine ancient healing techniques, energy work, and intuitive readings.

For our experience, we mixed different ingredients for beverages that would help us to start a new journey. It was really interesting to learn about the power of plants and how they can be used for healing purposes. Elly's knowledge, guidance, and warm personality made it feel like you were chatting with an old friend. She offers a wide range of services and products and is totally worth exploring. Trust me, I know it sounds a little off-the-wall, but it was a great experience that I am glad I had.
