Essential Packing-List for the Greek Islands

So you’re going to the Greek islands? Not to fret! I’ve compiled a list of my essential items to either bring or purchase in Greece. I’ll spare you the basics – undergarments, shirts, etc., and remind you of some items we tend to forget.

Note: I’m a big believer in less is more, so many of these items you can pick up in Greece rather than filling a suitcase!

2-3 Swimsuits

If you’re visiting Greece, one can assume you’ll be visiting at least a few beaches. While I strongly encourage mainland travel – allow for at least 2-3 nights on an island to truly soak up Greek life! You’ll be living in your bathing suit on island days, so pack enough that one is always dry.

Shower Shoes

If you’re staying in an Airbnb I suggest packing shower shoes. Many European restrooms have a combined toilet/shower floor space that I personally don’t like. If you’re staying in a hotel you are less likely to encounter this. I am simply a germaphobe.

Sunscreen

Bring along your own sunscreen. Unfortunately, the Hellenic sun is brutal and forced quite the markup on sunscreen in Greece. If you’re traveling with a carry-on (as you should) bring a few travel-size bottles.

Hat

Whether it’s a baseball hat or floppy “out of office”, a hat is essential. A lot of “I don’t burn” people like to play games – and you’re likely going to end up like a lobster (see my friend in the above photo!).

‘Euro” Plug

It’s easy to forget that different countries have different types of poweroutlets. Greece operates under the standard Euro Adapter. Many restaurants/hotels also have USB outlets.

International Driver’s Permit

Are you planning on renting a car? Reputable car rental services will require an International Drivers Permit. This is very easy to obtain. Fill out a bit of paperwork via mail or in-office, and pay a $20 permit fee.

Portable Charger

You’ll likely be lounging on the beach all day or sipping wine on a catamaran. Make sure you have a backup battery so you don’t miss any photo ops (or google maps for your way home!)

Travel Insurance

While you don’t need travel insurance, it’s definitely an affordable way to add some peace of mind to your trip. It’s particularly useful if you plan on renting ATVs or engaging in any type of sports. I use and recommend World Nomads.
