New Year's Resolution for Travelers

New Years Resolutions for Travelers

As the New Year approaches, it's time to start thinking about how we want to make the most of our upcoming year. For those of us who are passionate travelers, this can be an exciting opportunity to set some inspiring goals and resolutions for what we'd like to accomplish in the coming months. Whether you're looking for some inspiration or just need a starting point, here are some great New Year's resolutions for travelers:

1. Make a list of all the destinations you'd like to visit this year.

Whether it's somewhere close to home or on the other side of the world, write down all your dream destinations and start making plans for how you can make them achievable.

2. Take a break from technology and explore the world around you.

Studies have proven that unplugging can do wonders for your mental and physical health, so make it a priority to get out and explore without the distraction of your cell phone or laptop.

3. Listen to stories of local people wherever you travel.

Everyone has a story to tell, and it's amazing how much you can learn about a culture, people, and place by simply taking the time to listen.

4. Take advantage of all the cultures and cuisines.

Eating local food is one of the best ways to truly experience a destination. Try something new and exciting, or explore traditional dishes in different regions. You may even find your new favorite meal! Joining a local food tour on your trip is a great way to dip your toes into new cuisine.

5. Make an effort to support the local economy when you travel.

Shopping locally, taking public transportation, and staying in small hotels are all great ways to contribute to a sustainable travel model.

6. Lose weight!

Made you look! I mean off of your luggage.

Overpacking can be both a hassle and expensive if you end up being charged for extra weight. Make sure to only bring the essentials when packing for your next trip.

7. Make time for yourself while traveling.

Even though there's so much to see and do when we travel, it's important to take some time out of each day to relax, unwind and do something that makes you happy.

8. Commit to learning a new language.

Even if you only learn the basics, communicating in the native tongue of your destination will help enhance your travel experience and make it much easier to connect with locals. My Greek is pretty bad, but even the few phrases I do know have made meaningful connections when traveling in my homeland.

9. Add to your body count – of countries!

The number of countries you've been to is absolutely not the measure of how "good" of a traveler you are. It's quality over quantity. However, it doesn't hurt to set a goal for yourself to add more countries to your list each year.

10. Try a new activity.

When I was in Costa Rica, I tried white-water rafting! That's not something I have the opportunity to do in Chicago. I absolutely loved it! So, why not try something new and out of your comfort zone?

No matter how you choose to plan your year as a traveler, the most important thing is to remember that travel should always be fun. Make this year special by setting yourself some achievable goals and resolutions and making the most of every moment in 2023. Happy travels!
