Safest Destinations for Female Travelers: Five Spots from Personal Experience
As women, we tend to be extra cautious in choosing our travel destinations. I try not to let being a woman hold me back, but sometimes it is nice to know you have a place considered to be "safe for women" coming up on your adventure calendar.
For context, I live in downtown Chicago. Despite what the news says, it doesn't feel like "Chi-raq," but I believe it does allow me some small credentials in judging cities as feeling safe or not for a female traveler. Without further ado, here are five cities that I felt particularly safe in as a woman.
Of course, as I continue to travel, I am sure this list will expand and adjust.
#1 Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik is known for being one of the safest cities in the world in general. It's particularly welcoming to women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. If you're thinking of taking your first solo trip as a woman, Reykjavik, and Iceland in general, is a great pick. Not only is it safe, but it is very accessible for Americans as most of the country speaks English.
#2 Verona, Italy
Verona is not only safe, but the city of Romeo and Juliet is as picturesque and romantic as can be. Its small size allows you to explore the city at your own pace and take in all of its historical sites. The people of Verona are friendly and welcoming, making it a great option for female travelers who want to feel comfortable and safe in an unfamiliar place. Plus, it's an easy train ride from Venice (although I would suggest staying in Verona over Venice).
#3 Rethymno, Crete, Greece
Greece is a very safe country for solo travelers, and Rethymno was particularly charming. This sleepy beach town is perfect for those looking to enjoy a relaxing getaway. It's full of quaint cafes and friendly locals, making it the ideal spot for solo travelers.
#4 Dublin, Ireland
My regular readers know that, for some reason, I just am not a huge Ireland fan. That being said, Dublin feels very safe to me as a woman, and I appreciate that. If you've been dreaming of green, rolling hills and lush landscapes, Ireland may be the spot for you. The city has a great nightlife scene, and it's full of unique activities like the Trinity Library and the Molly Malone statue.
#5 Bruges, Belgium
Bruges is a delightful little village about an hour's train ride from Brussels. I felt very safe here, and the city is just full of beauty. From its canals to the cobblestone streets and historic buildings, it's a great pick for female travelers who want to experience the best of Europe without feeling overwhelmed.
No matter where you choose to travel, be sure to take necessary precautions, such as avoiding dark alleys or walking alone late at night.
