Things to Do in Fort William, Scotland, in the Winter
Nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Fort William is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and even the most devout muggles. Known for its stunning landscapes, historic monuments, and adventure sports, this town offers much more than meets the eye. Whether you're a fan of the great outdoors, looking to scratch that adventure itch, or simply want to take a step into the pages of history—or a certain wizard novel—Fort William has it all. In fact, Fort William really reminded me of Queenstown, New Zealand.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the top experiences that make Fort William a must-visit destination. From climbing to soap making, every traveler is bound to find an activity that piques their interest amidst the majestic beauty of the Highlands.
Hike Cow Hill Trail
For a taste of the Highlands' breathtaking beauty, lace up your hiking boots and hit the Cow Hill Trail. This local favorite offers panoramic views of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak. The trail weaves through woodlands, opens onto rolling hills, and provides a bird's-eye view of the town below.
There are a few different routes you can choose. I chose to do the 7-mile version. To ensure you don't get sent on the wrong one, I suggest downloading AllTrails and choosing this route.
If you're an active person, you'll find this hike pretty simple, with a few steep spots. Remember to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly, as the Highlands' climate can change rapidly.
Go Ice Climbing with Atlas Mountaineering
Now, the whole point of this trip to Fort William was so my adrenaline-junkie boyfriend could take an ice-climbing class. Under the guidance of expert climbers at Atlas Mountaineering, you'll experience the Highlands in a way few are able to.
Ice climbing is an extraordinary way to see the Highlands during its most magical season. The stark beauty of the frozen landscape combined with the physical thrill of climbing will create an adventure you'll never forget.
Take a Class at Highland Soap Company
Immerse yourself in a centuries-old tradition and take a class at Highland Soap Company. Learn the art of crafting soaps using natural, Scottish ingredients while gaining insight into local folklore and the impact of the craft on the surrounding community.
The class typically begins with a brief history of soap-making in the Highlands before you get to grips with creating your own. You'll choose your scents and mold designs, mix the ingredients, and leave with several bars of your very own soap (they make perfect gifts!). While your soap is settling, you'll get a certificate to enjoy a treat in the on-site cafe.
I was looking for something to do while my boyfriend was ice-climbing, and I had so much fun. I ended up being the only person signed up for the class, but me and my guide (I wish I could remember her name!) had such a delightful time chatting and creating together. I am not a crafty person, and it was simple enough that I had no issues at all.
Be sure to book your class in advance here.
Drive to the Hogwarts Express at Glenfinnan Viaduct
Channel your inner child and visit the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, better known to many as the route of the Hogwarts Express. This engineering marvel offers not only a dose of Harry Potter nostalgia but also stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Note that the train doesn't run in the winter. That said, it was really great to enjoy the filming location without the masses of crowds that would be there during the summer. If you are a Potter-Head, be sure to come back to both see and ride the Jacobite Steam Train between the months of May-October.
Stay at the Garrison Hotel
Cap off your Fort William adventure with a stay at the Garrison Hotel. This former jail has been lovingly restored and offers a blend of old-world charm and modern comfort. Its central location means you're just a stone’s throw away from the town’s attractions, shopping, and dining options.
The best part of our stay was the breakfast. At the time (and hopefully this continues), if you booked your stay directly through their website, you were entitled to a full breakfast. And it was GOOD.
We're talking hot meals, lots of options, and giant portions – plus unlimited coffee and tea all day. I 10/10 recommend staying at the Garrison on your trip to Fort William.
