3 Things to do near Gatlinburg, Tennessee
If you find yourself in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, it can be overwhelming. I like to call it the Wisconsin Dells on steroids to all my Chicago friends. If you find yourself trapped at a family reunion in this southern Chuckie-Cheese, here are some ideas of things to do to get away from the chaos:
#1 Visit Smoky Mountain National Park
You’re a five-minute drive away from the country’s most visited national park. One thing I was not prepared for was how much driving within the park is required. If you’re going to do one thing, make your way over to Clingman’s Dome for epic views of the Smoky Mountains.
If you’re an adrenaline junky, brave the 500 ft suspension bridge, which includes a glass-bottom 150 feet above the ground. There are lots of ski-lifts in Gatlinburg, but the Skylift Park is of the highest quality. Plus, your ticket is good for the entire day so you can come back for an epic sunset.
#3 Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
Make a day trip to Bryson City, North Carolina, and hop aboard the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. The drive to Bryson City from Gatlinburg takes you through Smoky Mountain National Park, which is a great start to the day. The five-hour train ride takes you through the beautiful Smokys and alongside some of the best kayaking routes in the world. I recommend booking a first-class ticket. First-class includes a 21+ only car, a full dinner, drinks, gift bag, and dessert. You’ll make a stop at one of the coolest little adventure spots in North Carolina, and can see part of the famous Appalachian Trail!
