Things to Do in Lake Garda, Italy

Lake Garda

After my now-boyfriend took me to Lake Garda in a valiant attempt to win me over, I quickly fell in love with an area often overlooked for the more popular Lake Como.

After a few visits, I've come to realize that this quaint lakeside town is second to none. Exceptionally popular with German tourists, this area boasts incredible food, stunning views, and a laid-back atmosphere that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Where to Stay in Lake Garda

In my humble opinion, the epic Como-esque views are on the north side of the 32-mile lake. Small cities such as Riva del Garda and Torbole are among the top picks for lodging. These cities offer a rugged charm with their colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and charming piazzas. Plus, they provide easy access to the lake for swimming, boating, and other water activities.

If you prefer a more luxurious stay, head to Sirmione on the southern side of Lake Garda. This picturesque town is known for its thermal springs and castle ruins perched on a narrow peninsula jutting out into the lake. It's also home to some of the most upscale hotels in the area, making it a popular choice for honeymooners and couples looking for a romantic getaway.

Things to Do in Lake Garda

Add a few of these "must-dos" to your Lake Garda itinerary:

Visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona

Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona

In my boyfriend’s ever-present attempts to convert me into a Catholic, he dragged me to this stunning church built into a cliffside. It was worth it. I promise.

Located on the eastern side of Lake Garda, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona offers breathtaking views and beautiful architecture. It's a peaceful and spiritual place that is definitely worth a visit. Seriously – it is beautiful.

Explore the Towns

Lake Garda

Each town on Lake Garda has its own unique charm. Take some time to wander through the streets, try local cuisine at restaurants, and enjoy gelato from one of the many gelaterias. Some of the must-visit towns include Riva del Garda, Limone sul Garda, and Malcesine.

Visit a Vineyard

Lake Garda is home to some excellent wineries and vineyards that offer tastings and tours. Soak in the beautiful scenery while sipping on local wines – it's a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Hike a Via Ferrata

If you're an experienced hiker and have the right equipment, consider tackling a Via Ferrata (iron path) in the Dolomites near Lake Garda. These protected climbing routes offer incredible views but require some skill and bravery.

Enjoy Water Sports

With its crystal clear waters, Lake Garda is the perfect place to try out water sports like sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, and kite surfing. You can also rent a boat or kayak to explore the lake on your own.

Visit Verona

If you're a fan of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," you can't miss a trip to Verona while visiting Lake Garda. This charming city is known for its connection to the famous love story and boasts stunning architecture, including the ancient Verona Arena. Plus, it's where I met my boy, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Relax on the Beach

There are many small beaches along Lake Garda where you can relax and soak up the sun. Make sure to pack a towel, sunscreen, and a good book to fully enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Ride the Bastione Scenic Lift

For a unique experience, take the Bastione Scenic Lift in Riva del Garda. This panoramic elevator takes you up to the top of Monte Rocchetta for great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

There's even a restaurant and bar up top where you can enjoy a glass of wine while exploring the ruins. We went at night and really enjoyed seeing the town all lit up.

Go Scuba Diving

Man scuba diving in Lake Garda

Northern Italy may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about diving, but Lake Garda offers some amazing underwater scenery. You can see old Roman ruins, shipwrecks, and a giant Jesus (Catholics, am I right?) within the 440+ feet deep water.

Final Thoughts

As the largest lake in Italy, Lake Garda offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. Whether you're into water sports, history, or just want to soak up the beauty of nature, this stunning destination has something for everyone.
