Visiting Santorini vs. Mykonos: Which Greek Island is Right for You?

If you're looking for a breathtaking Greek island escape, you may be wondering whether to visit Santorini or Mykonos. Both islands are popular tourist destinations, easy to access by ferry, and offer unique experiences. So which one is right for you? In this blog post, we'll compare Santorini and Mykonos and help you decide which one is the best fit for your travel needs!

Note: Santorini and Mykonos are both extremely, extremely touristy. If you’re looking for a more authentic Greek experience I would suggest islands like Naxos, Crete, or Milos.

Beaches

Mykonos

The island of Mykonos is located in the Aegean Sea, about 110 miles from Athens. Mykonos is known as a celebrity playground because of its pristine beaches.

The most popular beaches on the island include Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, and Elia Beach. Mykonos is also home to a number of hidden coves and secluded beaches, which are perfect for those looking for a more intimate beach experience.

Santorini

Santorini was created from the remains of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago. Some say that the island used to be the scene of the mythical city of Atlantis.

The most popular beaches on the island are Perissa Beach, Kamari Beach, and Red Beach. Santorini also has a number of black sand beaches, which are unique to the island.

Things to Do/Attractions

Mykonos

Some of the most popular things to do in Mykonos include exploring the island's many beaches, visiting the windmills in Chora, taking a sunset cruise, and dancing the night away at one of Mykonos' famous nightclubs.

Santorini

Santorini is home to a number of historical and archaeological sites, including the ruins of Ancient Thera, Akrotiri archaeological site, and Oia Castle. In addition to its historical attractions, Santorini also offers stunning views of the caldera, beautiful sunsets, cruises, and delicious wine tastings.

I've taken a sunset cruise in Santorini via an Airbnb Experience, and it was one of my favorite activities I've done on all my trips to Greece.

Overall, Santorini offers more for families, couples, and friends as there are a diversity of activities. However, if you are looking for a straight-up party scene and pristine beaches, Mykonos may be your style.

Winner: Santorini – but it depends on your personal vibe.

Nightlife

Mykonos

Mykonos is famous for its nightlife scene. The island is home to a number of nightclubs and bars, which are popular with tourists and locals alike. You can find high-end clubs, dive bars, and some of the best DJs in the world putting on shows.

Santorini

There are a number of bars and clubs in Santorini, but the nightlife here is more low-key than in Mykonos. If you're looking for a relaxed evening out, you can enjoy some of the local wines at one of Santorini's many vineyards.

Restaurants

Mykonos

There are a variety of restaurants to choose from in Mykonos, ranging from high-end dining to more casual fare. Some of the most popular dishes include fresh seafood, Greek salads, and kofta.

Santorini

Santorini is home to some of the best restaurants in Greece. The island's cuisine is based on fresh, local ingredients and includes dishes such as fava (a type of split pea purée), tomato fritters, and grilled octopus. Plus, the island produces some of the best white wine in the world.

Price

Mykonos

Mykonos is a bit more expensive than Santorini, but not by much. The island has a number of high-end hotels and restaurants, but you can also find more affordable options if you book early and do your research.

Santorini

Santorini is also one of the more expensive Greek islands. Let's be honest – if you're coming to Mykonos or Santorini, you're not going to be traveling on a budget.

Winner: Santorini – but not by much

Overall, Santorini is the better island to visit if you're looking for a more diverse range of activities and attractions. However, Mykonos is ideal if you're looking for pristine beaches and a party scene. Both islands are relatively expensive, but Mykonos is slightly more so. Ultimately, the best Greek island for you to visit depends on your personal preferences.

Both are beautiful and worth a visit, but remember, neither of these islands truly provides the "authentic Greek experience."
