Things to do in Gatlinburg, TN: Gatlinburg Skylift Park

While entrance was provided by the Gatlinburg Skylift Park, all opinions are my own.

The Gatlinburg Skylift Park located just outside Smoky Mountain National Park is the one thing worth doing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

I’m going to be straight with you: I did not like Gatlinburg. It was like the Wisconsin Dells on steroids. However, the Gatlinburg Skylift Park was 100% worth the frustration of traffic and overcrowding.

The Skylift, built-in 1954, carries visitors 500ft via ski lift to Crockett Mountain. We were so lucky to see a black bear walk underneath us while on the skylift.

When you reach the top of the skylift you are greeted by a beautiful patio overlooking the Smoky’s, a restaurant, gift shop, and a path to the famous Skybridge. The Skybridge was recently placed in the historical database. Fun fact: my grandma and grandpa rode up the skylift back in the 70s and 80s– which is part of the reason my dad and I drove down to visit this funky town.

The suspension-style Skybridge is about 680 feet long and 150 feet high. For thrill-seekers, you’ll crossover 30ft of glass that looks directly down at a 150ft drop between the mountain – it definitely feels weird. Your brain has trouble comprehending why you can see below you. There is no exit from the other side, so you’ll have to make your way back across for the second round of heights!

A nice bonus to the Skypark is that your wristband is good all day. That means you can ride back to downtown Gatlinburg to grab brunch at the Pancake Pantry, and come back up for a stunning sunset that evening.

If skilifts aren’t your style, there is a trail you can take to hike up the 500ft. Be sure to be bear aware! Black bears are no stranger to even the most populated areas of the trail.

All and all – I didn’t love Gatlinburg but I did love the Gatlinburg Skylife Park. This family-friendly activity is great for families and thrill-seekers alike.
