Things to Do in Munich, Germany

As someone who is dating someone stationed in Bavaria, I've found myself in Munich much more than the average American. Bavaria is like Texas: Big, bold, and very much their own thing.

I've explored much of Germany, but Munich remains my favorite place. Whether you're there for Oktoberfest or catching the Christmas markets, here are some of my "don't miss" items to add to your to-do list.

Visit the Nymphenburg Palace

A grand Baroque palace with beautiful gardens, the Nymphenburg Palace symbolizes Munich's rich history. The palace is home to several museums and the famous 'Gallery of Beauties'’

Explore Marienplatz

The heart of Munich, Marienplatz, is a vibrant square filled with historic buildings. Don't miss the Glockenspiel show, a charming spectacle with mechanical figures that dance and joust.

If you're visiting over the December holidays, this is the main square for the markets. Be sure to try some Glühwein. Pro tip: You can get a euro or two back if you return the cup. Or, start collecting Christmas market cups like me!

Dine at Hofbräuhaus

Did you really go to Munich if you didn’t enjoy a liter of beer here?

Experience Bavarian hospitality at its finest at Hofbräuhaus, Munich's most famous beer hall. It offers traditional German meals local beer, and often features live folk music.

Stroll in the English Garden

The English Garden is one of the world’s largest urban public parks, perfect for a leisurely walk or a picnic. It also features a Chinese tower, a beer garden, and a lake for boating.

Visit BMW Museum

Listen, I’m not a car person, and the BMW Museum remains one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had in Munich. The museum is state-of-the-art and is just plain cool.

When you’re done, stroll over to the showroom and see the fanciest top-notch cars on the market today.

Take a Half-Day Trip to Visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial

Just a short drive outside of Munich is the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. While a sober experience, I believe it’s important for everyone to prioritize making a trip here.

Visit the Hellabrunn Zoo

I'm a bit of a zoo nerd. The Hellabrunn Zoo, one of the largest zoos in Europe and the world's first 'geo-zoo' — where their geographic habitats instead of species group animals. It's home to over 19,000 animals from over 700 species.

Take a Day Trip:

Munich is in the perfect location for a day trip. Popular options include Neuschwanstein Castle, Salzburg, and Nuremberg.

Relax in a Beer Garden

Munich is known for its beer gardens, and there's no better way to experience them than on a warm summer day. Pack a picnic or buy food from one of the vendors, order a beer by the liter, and soak up the laid-back.
