Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

As someone who has made a career out of travel writing, it's deeply shocking to me that it took over 30 years to get to Mexico. I know, I know. I'm embarrassed for me. That said, I'm deeply grateful that my first trip to this vibrant country was Puerto Vallarta. I was only here a short time, but I'll highlight a few of my favorite things to do in Puerto Vallarta. That said – I know there is a lot more to see and do.

Participate in a traditional Cacao Ceremony

This one's a little different, but I had to include it. Cacao ceremonies have been a part of Mayan and Aztec cultures for centuries, and they are gaining popularity around the world as a spiritual practice.

In Puerto Vallarta, there are several providers that offer cacao ceremonies where you can learn about the history and ritual behind this sacred plant while enjoying a cup of hot cacao infused with traditional spices. You can learn all about my experience, and if its right for you, in this post about what a cacao ceremony is.

Take a Boat and Party at Majahuitas Resort

Majahuitas is a secluded resort that can only be reached by boat, making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Vallarta. The resort offers day passes where you can relax on their private beach, swim in their crystal-clear waters, and enjoy delicious meals at their restaurant.

But what makes this place truly special is its famous "boat party" option. You can charter a boat with friends and spend the day cruising around Banderas Bay with drinks, snacks, water activities, and music provided by the resort.

Be sure to read reviews of providers carefully. There are some services that just aren't quite up to snuff. But if you land a good one – the resort itself is beautiful (and an Instagram-worthy dream).

Take a Food or Walking Tour

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta has a rich culinary scene, and taking a food tour is the perfect way to explore it. These tours will take you to local restaurants and street vendors where you can taste authentic Mexican dishes and learn about their history and cultural significance.

If you prefer to walk, there are also walking tours available that will take you through the colorful streets of Puerto Vallarta, giving you an insight into its history, art, and architecture. A knowledgeable guide will lead the way and share interesting stories and facts about the city along the route.

Visit a Local Market

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

One of my favorite things to do in any new city is to visit its local market. But the market isn't just about shopping – it's a cultural experience within itself. You can try local snacks and dishes at the food stalls or watch artisans create their beautiful crafts right in front of you. Be prepared to negotiate prices with vendors!

Take a Day Trip

Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by beautiful towns and natural wonders that are well worth exploring on a day trip. One popular excursion is to the nearby town of Sayulita, known for its surf culture and laid-back vibe. You can also take a boat tour to the Marietas Islands, where you can snorkel and swim on hidden beaches.
