What to Bring on Your Trip to Italy: 10 Things to Have for Italy in the Summer

Woman in Positano

It seems like every other Instagram or TikTok is someone in Italy (guilty). Summer 2022 has been deemed #ItalianSummer, and I am here for it.

If you're one of the thousands headed to the land of pasta and wine this summer, I've created the ultimate list of what you need for your trip to Italy.

What to Bring on Your Trip to Italy (Summer)

Sunscreen

The sun here is not a joke. Even if you’re from Florida, you need to pack sunscreen. I suggest buying a few carry-on size bottles as the prices for sunscreen in Italy and Greece are usually outrageously inflated.

‘Euro” Plug

It’s easy to forget that different countries have different types of power outlets. Italy operates under the standard Euro Adapter. Many restaurants/hotels also have USB outlets.

Scarf

If you’re planning on doing any church visits, both men and women are required to cover their shoulders and knees. This includes visiting the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. When visiting in the summer, Italy can be HOT. Rather than packing sleeved dresses or shirts, bring along a light scarf that you can quickly throw on and easily carry around with you for site visits.

International Drivers Permit

Are you planning on renting a car? Reputable car rental services will require an International Drivers Permit. This is very easy to obtain. Fill out a bit of paperwork via mail or in-office, and pay a $20 permit fee.

Travel Insurance

While you don’t need travel insurance, it’s definitely an affordable way to add some peace of mind to your trip. It’s particularly useful if you plan on renting ATVs or engaging in any type of sports. I use and recommend World Nomads.

Linen & Light Clothes

It’s going to be hot, hot, hot no matter where you’re staying in Italy. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing options. If you’re going anywhere south of Tuscany – packing for extreme heat is a must. It was over 100 F most of my time in Rome in mid-June.

Portable Charger

You’ll likely be getting lost amongst the ruins or sipping wine in the midst of Tuscan vineyards. Make sure you have a backup battery so you don’t miss any photo ops (or google maps for your way home!)

International Phone Plan

Check with your cellphone provider on international data plans so you don’t end up with any surprises when you get home.

Water Bottle

One of my favorite parts of Italy is the abundance of free and clean water stations throughout the country. Tap water is safe to drink in Italy, so if you have a reusable water bottle you never need to buy any! These water stations are readily available across major cities.

Shower Shoes

If you’re staying in an Airbnb I suggest packing shower shoes. Many European restrooms have a combined toilet/shower floor space that I personally don’t like. If you’re staying in a hotel you are less likely to encounter this. I am simply a germaphobe.
